Buckeye Hills Career Center has announced that Michael Ferrell (OHHS) and Ashley Rucker (RVHS) were elected as Regional Officers for SkillsUSA. Being a Regional Officer is one of the highest honors a student can earn while attending Buckeye Hills Career Center. Michael Ferrell was elected to serve as Regional President, and Ashley Rucker, Regional Parliamentarian. Both participated in the Regional Officer Training Institute held in January in Washington D.C.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce and helps each student excel. It also is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly known as Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA).
The students ran against over 20 other officer candidates vying for seven coveted positions in the South Central Region. There are six regions in Ohio with each region having seven officers. Officer candidates were required to go through preliminary rounds and give a two minute speech, and in the final round answered an impromptu question.
Ferrell and Rucker traveled to Washington D.C. and Leesburg, Va. along with the other 40 regional officers and six state officers and participated in the organization’s leadership training.
